About Titan hypnotherapy

Welcome to Titan Hypnotherapy!

Titan Hypnotherapy exists for those with dreams and aspirations. I help athletes chase their dreams and support those wanting to live happier, healthier lives.

At Titan Hypnotherapy, I offer Hypno-CBT, a form of Cognitive Behavioral Hypnotherapy. This is an integrative talking therapy that explores how thoughts, feelings and behaviours are affecting clients and preventing them achieving their goals. Hypnosis is then used to solidify new coping strategies using focused attention and suggestions. Depending on client needs, a range of other techniques and methods might also be drawn upon, such as transformational coaching or mindfulness.

Hypnotherapy practice can be diverse and look different depending on the therapist and the branch they studied under. At Titan Hypnotherapy, evidence-based and scientific  methodology is preferred. To learn more about this, please see the FAQs.

Sessions are conducted online, with the exception of sports teams requiring support at their training locations. I am available to support teams in person who are based in Nottingham.

Welcome to Titan Hypnotherapy! I am a hypnotherapist specialising in sports, health and wellbeing. As a sportsperson myself, I bring a unique perspective to my practice as I've already walked the path many of my clients are on. I have represented England for wrestling and was formerly ranked number 5 in Great Britain for Judo. I have competed at numerous national and international events, even living and training abroad. I understand first hand the challenges and triumphs that come with the pursuit of sport.

Having overcome many personal challenges, including dyspraxia, I love to help my clients overcome their own personal barriers to achieve what they want in life, whether in sports or general health and wellbeing. Whatever your goal is, I'm here to support you.

For further information about my qualifications, please see the FAQs.

What to expect

When you first make contact, you will be invited to a free, 30 minute discovery call. This is your opportunity to learn more about Hypno-CBT and if it's right for you.

If you choose to book sessions, your first one will be longer - 1 hour and 30 minutes, to give enough time for a thorough assessment. Subsequent sessions are 1 hour long.

Each session is £60. To give enough time to see the results of therapy techniques and strategies, it is recommended to book with a view of completing at least 3 sessions. Most interventions will run for 4-6 sessions, although it could be shorter or longer depending on the complexity of the condition.

Smoking cessation has a slightly different format. This programme involves one 2 hour session and a follow-up 1 hour session. There is also pre-work before the programme starts and 6 weeks of email support if needed from the first session. This programme costs £220. If further sessions are desired, these will be 1 hour long and £60 per session.

  • How does hypnosis/hypnotherapy work?
Hypnotherapy is the use of suggestions and focused attention. Words influence and impact us, and when our attention is focused on them it increases their effects. We use these effects for the benefit of the client. For example, we can help clients feel more confident during important events, or relaxed. Hypnosis is not something "done" to the client. Instead, I teach clients how to do hypnosis for themselves so they can create the effects whenever they want. Hypnosis works by the client taking an active role and putting the required effort into the process. Therefore, one of the most important factors for success is the commitment of the client.
  • Will you put me into a "Trance"?
No. This is a topic of fierce debate in the hypnotherapy community. Hypnotherapists largely fall into two groups - "state" theorists, who say there is a special "trance" clients go into when under hypnosis, and "non-state" theorists, who say there is no special "trance" state that is different to anything else a person may experience naturally in their day-to-day life. As a hypnotherapist, I am not convinced there is sufficient scientific evidence supporting the concept of a special "trance" state and therefore do not use this terminology. In other words, I am a non-state hypnotherapist.
  • Will I be unconscious?
No. Following on from the above question, you will be fully conscious and in control of what is happening the whole time.
  • Can you make me do things I don't want to do?
Contrary to what stage hypnosis, TV shows or pop psychology suggests, there is little scientific evidence to suggest that hypnosis can make someone do something they do not want to do. Neither is there convincing evidence to suggest that it's possible to be "trapped" or "stuck" in hypnosis. For those who come across evidence where people appear to be "taken control of" or made to do something "against their will", it's worth considering where this evidence is coming from. For example - is it a TV show where the primary purpose is entertainment and generating views? If the answer is yes, then it's possible there is an ulterior motive behind the apparent "science", and what you see should probably be taken with a pinch of salt.
  • Does hypnotherapy bypass the conscious mind and speak to the "subconscious" or "unconscious" mind?
The concept of "subconscious" or "unconscious" minds stems from Freud and his psychoanalytic theory. Whilst this was once a hugely popular and influential psychological theory, as a hypnotherapist I do not believe it has stood the test of time well in terms of research and evidence supporting it's concepts. I am not convinced there is evidence of "subconscious" or "unconscious minds" and therefore do not use this terminology.
  • Can anyone be hypnotised?
Yes, as long as they want to be! Those who come to hypnotherapy with strong motivation to put in the required practice can learn how to hypnotise themselves. There are some studies to suggest some might find it easier than others, however, it is a trainable skill. That means anyone can learn and get better at it if they put in the required effort.
  • Do I just lie there and not do anything during hypnotherapy?
Quite the opposite - you are an active participant. Your success largely depends on your own motivation and the effort you put into practicing. I am not a hypnotherapist who speaks at you and makes things happen - I teach you how to do hypnosis for yourselves. I teach you hypnotic skills and coping mechanisms to achieve what you want, and it's up to you to then practice and implement the effects. The final goal is for you to have your own set of coping strategies and skills so you can be your own therapist - at that point, you will no longer need me.
  • Are there any risks to hypnosis?
There is a small risk of something known as an abreaction happening during hypnosis. This is when someone recalls an upsetting memory so vividly that it causes distress and re-upsets them. It can happen as part of deliberate or accidental memory recall or regression. I am trained to support my clients if an abreaction occurs and safeguard them. There is also a risk for memory recall techniques known as False Memory Syndrome. Our memory is fallible, and when we are asked to recall things we can't remember well or have no real memory of, our imagination can take over. There are many instances of hypnosis being done to "recall lost memories" when people are struggling to remember something, but instead of recalling the true memories, they imagined new memories and believed them to be true. In other words, they developed false memories. For this reason, I do not offer services to recall lost memories or past life regression, as it carries the risk of False Memory Syndrome.
  • Is there anyone you won't treat?
Yes, there are some groups of people for whom hypnotherapy is generally not recommended - or at least if delivered by non-medical professionals. For example, those experiencing psychosis. Since hypnotherapy increases the effects of the mind and the imagination, there is a risk it will strengthen hallucinations or maladaptive beliefs. Therefore, I am unfortunately unable to treat those suffering from psychosis. If you're experiencing psychosis but still want hypnotherapy, I would recommend reaching out to an advanced medical practitioner such as a Psychiatrist who also has hypnotherapy training. I also do not treat those experiencing mental health conditions such as depression, as I am not a trained mental health worker. If anyone comes to me with a case I believe to be outside my sphere of competence, I will recommend they seek the support of a different therapist so they can find the person best able to help them.
  • Why is smoking cessation a different format?
With other conditions, it is normal to give clients a few techniques at a time to practice over several weeks and developing their coping skills. However, stopping smoking can be a very difficult process, as is shown by how many people relapse after trying to quit. For this reason, a more intensive intervention is needed to get clients ready and feel they have all the skills necessary to become happy, health non-smokers as soon as they take that step. Pre-work is given so that the first 2-hour session can hit the ground running, and clients would be expected to commit to becoming non-smokers after that first session. The second, 1-hour session is then used to solidify new habits and tackle any issues the clients have found in their first week of being non-smokers. More support is also given during the weeks following treatment so the client knows they have someone to lean on if they are feeling tempted or need a bit of extra help.
  • Do you use nicotine patches or other products during smoking cessation?
I do not offer or recommend clients use nicotine products in conjunction with this smoking cessation programme. There reason is CBH focuses on identifying and breaking habit patterns. The habit of smoking at certain times of the day and the routines built around it are part of what make it so difficult to quit, and if nicotine products are used then these habits and addiction are not being properly treated - one habit is simply being swapped out for another. If a client absolutely feels like they cannot stop without using a product to help them then I will work with them in the way they feel most comfortable, but I would not recommend using products if possible. I also cannot dispense or prescribe such products, clients would need to obtain these from their GP or pharmacy.
  • Does smoking cessation cover vaping?
This programme does not cover vaping cessation because it is tailored around those smoking cigarettes. Since vaping is still a relatively new habit, the science of the effects on health and methods for treating it is still catching up. However, if this is something you are interested in, please reach out and we can develop a tailored treatment plan for how to break this habit separately from the smoking cessation programme.
  • Where do you treat clients?
All sessions are online with the exception of sports teams who require me to meet the teams on site. I am available to support teams in person who train in Nottingham.
  • What qualifications and accreditations do you have?
From the UK College of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy: NCFE Level 5 Higher Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy Smoking Cessation Masterclass CBT for perfectionism workshop In progress from the Anglo European College for Therapeutic Hypnosis: Sports hypnosis certificate I also have an International Coaching Federation-approved certificate in Transformational Coaching Accreditation: Accredited Member of ACCPH - Accredited Counsellors, Coaches, Psychotherapists and Hypnotherapists
